Common Alpha Boiler E01 Fault questions

Is E01 a big job?

Often not. It is commonly the gas supply, a frozen pipe or a single part.

I rent in Selly Oak. Who pays for the repair?

In most tenancies the landlord is responsible for the boiler. Report it to them or the agent straight away.

Can you fix Alpha boilers?

Yes. Send the model and the code and we will tell you what it is likely to be.

Can I just keep resetting it?

Once is fine. If the code comes straight back, stop resetting and get it looked at, because the boiler is telling you the cause is still there.

How do I know the engineer is qualified?

Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. The back lists exactly which appliances that engineer is qualified to work on, and the number can be checked on the Gas Safe Register.

E01 on many Alpha boilers means ignition failure: the boiler tried to light and could not detect a flame, so it locked out. Alpha combis were a popular budget choice in rented homes and new-build flats, and Birmingham has plenty of them, from student houses in Selly Oak to conversions around the Jewellery Quarter.

Check the gas first. Try the hob. If nothing lights, the problem is the supply, and on a prepayment meter, which many rented homes have, the credit may simply have run out. Top up and reset once.

If the gas is on, check the condensate pipe on a cold day, especially in flats where it runs along an outside wall. A frozen pipe stops the boiler lighting. Thaw it with warm water and reset once.

If E01 keeps returning, the usual causes are the ignition electrode, the gas valve, the flue or the control board. If you rent, tell your landlord or letting agent, because fixing the boiler is their responsibility and they will want it done quickly. Codes differ a little between models and years, so check the meaning in your own boiler manual too.

Send a photo of the display and the boiler badge on WhatsApp and we can usually tell you the likely cause before anyone sets off. If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
