Central heating repairs and improvements in Birmingham. Cold radiators, sludged systems, power flushing, new radiators and controls across the city.
Bled, balanced or cleaned, depending on whether the problem is air, an unbalanced system or sludge.
Every radiator flushed through at pressure on systems where sludge has built up over the years.
Fitted on the return to the boiler to catch the sludge before it reaches the heat exchanger.
Replacements, upsizes, designer radiators and radiators moved for kitchens and extensions.
TRVs fitted so each room can be set to its own temperature and the boiler works less.
Separate heating zones and smart controls for the bigger houses that heat unevenly from floor to floor.
That is usually trapped air. Bleeding the radiator lets it out. If it keeps coming back, there may be a small leak letting air in, or a problem with the pump.
Most often sludge settling in the bottom of the radiator. A clean or a power flush is usually the fix.
Not always. If only one or two radiators are affected and the water is not black when bled, a chemical clean and a filter may be enough. We will tell you which.
Yes, as long as the boiler has the capacity. We will check the heat output needed for the room.
They can, mainly by heating rooms only when you are using them. How much depends on how you use the house, so we will not promise a figure.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. The back lists exactly which appliances that engineer is qualified to work on, and the number can be checked on the Gas Safe Register.
A lot of Birmingham's central heating was never designed in one go. In the older terraces of Kings Heath, Handsworth, Balsall Heath and Sparkhill, the heating was added in stages: a few radiators in the 1970s, an extension radiator in the 1990s, a new combi in the 2010s. The result is a system with long pipe runs, mixed pipe sizes and rooms that never quite get warm.
The most common complaint is a radiator that is hot at the bottom and cold at the top, which is air, or cold at the bottom and warm at the top, which is usually sludge. Sludge is the black iron oxide that builds up inside steel radiators over the years, and in an older system it slowly blocks radiators, pump and boiler alike.
The fix depends on how bad it is. Sometimes balancing the system, so the radiators nearest the boiler stop taking all the heat, is enough. Sometimes a chemical clean and a magnetic filter will do it. On a heavily sludged system a power flush, which pushes water and cleaning chemicals through every radiator at pressure, is the honest answer.
We also fit new radiators, move radiators for kitchen and extension work, add thermostatic radiator valves and set up heating controls, including zoning in the larger Edgbaston and Harborne houses where one thermostat for three floors is never going to be right.
If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
