New boiler installation in Birmingham. Honest advice on combi, system and regular boilers for terraces, 1930s semis and larger Victorian houses across the city.
Like-for-like and upgrade combi replacements, the most common job in the city's terraces and semis.
For the larger houses where more than one bathroom needs hot water at the same time.
Old back boilers behind gas fires taken out and replaced with a modern wall-hung boiler.
Undersized gas pipes in older terraces upsized so a new combi gets the gas it needs.
A power flush or chemical clean and a magnetic filter, so sludge from the old system does not shorten the new boiler's life.
Simple programmers or smart thermostats, set up and explained before we leave.
One bathroom, usually a combi. Two or more bathrooms used at the same time, often a system boiler with a cylinder. We will look at the house and tell you which suits it.
A straight combi swap is usually a day. Moving the boiler, converting from a system to a combi or taking out a back boiler can take two or three.
Usually, yes, within the limits of where a flue and condensate pipe can go. Moving it adds pipework, so it is priced at the survey.
Yes. The back boiler and its gas fire are removed, the chimney opening dealt with, and a modern boiler fitted on a wall, often in the kitchen.
Most manufacturers offer a warranty when the boiler is registered and serviced every year. The length depends on the make and model, and you will have it in writing.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. The back lists exactly which appliances that engineer is qualified to work on, and the number can be checked on the Gas Safe Register.
Choosing a new boiler in Birmingham mostly comes down to the house. A Victorian terrace in Moseley or Sparkhill with one bathroom is usually a straightforward combi job: hot water on demand, no tank in the loft and the airing cupboard back as storage. A 1930s semi in Kingstanding or Northfield is often the same, and many of those houses are now on a boiler fitted in the early 2010s that is reaching the end of its working life.
The bigger houses are different. A Harborne or Edgbaston villa with two or three bathrooms can ask more of a combi than it can give, because a combi heats water as it is used and two showers at once is where that shows. Those houses often do better with a system boiler and a cylinder, and a good installer will tell you that rather than fitting the biggest combi on the market.
There is also the work around the boiler. Older terraces sometimes have a gas supply pipe that is too small for a modern combi, a flue position that no longer meets the rules, or a condensate pipe that would have to run a long way outside to reach a drain. Those are the things that change the price, and they should be spotted at the survey, not on the day.
Every installation is quoted after a look at the house, with the boiler, the flue, the controls and any pipework changes written down, so you know exactly what you are paying for before anything is booked. The old system is flushed or cleaned first so the new boiler is not fed with years of sludge.
If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
