Boiler Banging or Whistling in Birmingham, the right way

Banging or kettling

Usually sludge on the heat exchanger making water overheat in spots.

Gurgling

Air in the system or low pressure. Bleed radiators and check the gauge.

Whistling

Often a restricted flow or a pump problem.

Humming

Frequently the pump running too fast or wearing out.

Common Boiler Banging or Whistling questions

Why is my boiler banging?

Most often sludge on the heat exchanger. A system clean and a filter usually sort it.

Is a noisy boiler dangerous?

Not usually immediately, but it is a sign of wear. If you smell gas, ring 0800 111 999.

Does Birmingham have hard water?

No, Birmingham's water is soft, so limescale is less often the cause than in other areas.

Why is my boiler gurgling?

Usually air in the system or low pressure. Bleeding radiators and topping up often helps.

Will a power flush stop the banging?

If sludge is the cause, often yes, especially with a magnetic filter fitted afterwards.

Do you cover all of Birmingham?

Yes, from Erdington and Kingstanding to Moseley, Harborne and Northfield.

A noisy boiler is telling you something, and the type of noise usually points to the cause. Banging or kettling, a sound like a kettle boiling, often means sludge or scale on the heat exchanger making water overheat in spots. Gurgling usually means air in the system or low pressure. Whistling can be a restricted flow or a pump issue. A loud hum is often the pump itself.

Birmingham has soft water, supplied from the Elan Valley in Wales, so heavy limescale is less common than in many parts of the country. In the city's older systems, the more likely cause of banging is sludge: the black iron oxide that builds up in steel radiators and pipework over many years, especially in terraces where the heating has been added to bit by bit.

Some checks are safe to do yourself. Look at the pressure gauge, around 1 to 1.5 bar cold is normal, and bleed any radiators that are cold at the top. If the noise started after the system was drained or new radiators fitted, air is the likely cause.

Persistent banging should not be ignored. Overheating stresses the heat exchanger, and the fix is usually a system clean or power flush, a magnetic filter, and checking the pump and flow. We find the cause before recommending anything.

If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
