Hot water gone cold in your Birmingham home while the heating still works? The usual causes on combi and cylinder systems, what to check first, and what an engineer will look at.
On a combi, a stuck diverter sends heat to the radiators but not the taps.
A combi may stop making hot water if the pressure has dropped.
Turned down or failed, and the cylinder never heats up.
A stuck valve on a system boiler stops the cylinder heating.
Check it is set to hot water, not heating only.
A blocked filter, failing sensor or low flow rate.
On a combi, usually the diverter valve. On a cylinder system, the thermostat, valve or programmer.
Yes. Check the gauge reads around 1 to 1.5 bar with the boiler cold.
Often low flow, a blocked filter or a sensor fault. A photo of the display helps.
It is a common, replaceable part. We will give you the price before any work starts.

When the heating works but the taps run cold, the boiler itself is usually fine. On a combi boiler the most common cause is the diverter valve, which switches hot water between the radiators and the taps, sticking in the heating position. On a system or regular boiler with a hot water cylinder, it is usually the cylinder thermostat, the motorised valve, or the programmer set to heating only.
Most Birmingham terraces and 1930s semis now run on combi boilers, so the diverter valve is the first suspect. Low water pressure can also stop a combi delivering hot water, so check the pressure gauge: around 1 to 1.5 bar with the boiler cold is normal. In the larger Edgbaston and Harborne houses with cylinders, check the programmer is set to hot water and the cylinder thermostat has not been turned right down.
If hot water comes through but only lukewarm, or it goes hot and cold while you shower, the cause can be a blocked filter, a failing sensor, or a low flow rate not triggering the boiler properly.
Tell us whether you have a combi or a cylinder, and what the boiler display shows when you run a hot tap. That usually narrows it to one or two parts before anyone sets off.
If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
