Ideal Boiler Showing F2 in Birmingham, the right way

What F2 means

The flame went out or could not stay lit, so the boiler locked out.

Frozen condensate pipe

The most common winter cause in Birmingham. Warm water, then one reset.

Check the gas supply

If the hob will not light either, it is the supply, not the boiler.

Prepayment meters

Run-out credit causes F2 more often than people expect.

Electrode and gas valve

If F2 keeps coming back, these are the parts an engineer checks.

Flue

A damaged or blocked flue can starve the flame and needs looking at.

Good to know

Common Ideal Boiler Showing F2 questions

Is F2 dangerous?

The boiler has shut itself down safely. If you smell gas, though, follow the gas-escape advice straight away.

Why did F2 appear on a cold morning?

Almost always a frozen condensate pipe. Thaw it with warm water and reset the boiler once.

My hob works but the boiler still shows F2. What now?

Then the gas supply is fine and the fault is in the boiler, usually the electrode or gas valve. It needs an engineer.

Can I just keep resetting it?

Once is fine. If the code comes straight back, stop resetting and get it looked at, because the boiler is telling you the cause is still there.

How do I know the engineer is qualified?

Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. The back lists exactly which appliances that engineer is qualified to work on, and the number can be checked on the Gas Safe Register.

F2 on an Ideal boiler, Logic, Vogue or Independent, means the boiler lit the flame and then lost it, or could not keep it alight. It shuts down for safety and waits for you to reset it. On its own the code does not say why, but in Birmingham the causes are surprisingly predictable.

The first is the condensate pipe. Ideal combis in the Kingstanding and Northfield semis often have the condensate running out through a side wall and down to a gully, and on a freezing night it ices up. The water backs up, the flame is starved and F2 appears, usually on the first properly cold morning of the year. Thaw the pipe with warm, not boiling, water and reset once.

The second is the gas supply. Check another gas appliance, like the hob. If that will not light either, the problem is the supply, not the boiler, and on a prepayment meter, common in rented terraces in Sparkhill and Handsworth, the credit or emergency credit may simply have run out.

If the pipe is clear and the gas is on but F2 keeps returning, the likely culprits are the ignition or sensing electrode, the gas valve or a flue problem, and that is a job for an engineer. Codes differ a little between models and years, so check the meaning in your own boiler manual too.

Send a photo of the display and the boiler badge on WhatsApp and we can usually tell you the likely cause before anyone sets off. If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
