Vaillant ecoTEC showing F28 in Birmingham? The boiler tried to light and could not. The usual reasons, what you can check yourself and when it needs an engineer.
The boiler tried to light several times and never detected a flame.
Try the hob. If that will not light, the issue is the supply, not the boiler.
Check the credit and the emergency credit.
A common winter cause. Warm water, then reset once.
F28 never lit. F29 lit and then lost the flame.
Ignition electrode, gas valve, gas pressure and the control board.
Yes, once, using the reset button. If F28 returns, stop and get it checked.
Frozen condensate pipes, and gas demand peaking on cold mornings, both make ignition fail more often.
Not usually. It is most often a single part or a supply issue, and many are quick to put right.
Once is fine. If the code comes straight back, stop resetting and get it looked at, because the boiler is telling you the cause is still there.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. The back lists exactly which appliances that engineer is qualified to work on, and the number can be checked on the Gas Safe Register.
F28 on a Vaillant ecoTEC means the boiler went through its lighting sequence several times and never saw a flame, so it locked out. It is one of the most common codes on Vaillant combis, and Birmingham has a lot of them, particularly in the terraces of Moseley, Kings Heath and Stirchley where a compact combi was the easiest fit for a small back kitchen.
Start with the gas. If the hob or gas fire will not light either, the problem is upstream of the boiler: a prepayment meter out of credit, the emergency control valve by the meter knocked off, or a supply problem in the street. If the hob works, the gas is reaching the house and the fault is further in.
In winter, check the condensate pipe next. A frozen pipe can stop an ecoTEC lighting at all, and on the first hard frost F28 calls come in from all over the city on the same morning. Thaw it gently with warm water and reset once.
If neither is the answer, F28 usually points to the ignition electrode, the gas valve, the main control board or a gas pressure problem at the boiler. Those need testing with the right equipment, and that is an engineer's job. F28 is different from F29, which means the flame lit and then went out. Codes differ a little between models and years, so check the meaning in your own boiler manual too.
Send a photo of the display and the boiler badge on WhatsApp and we can usually tell you the likely cause before anyone sets off. If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
