Viessmann Vitodens showing F4 in Birmingham? On many models it means no flame signal. Common causes, from the gas supply to a frozen condensate pipe, and what needs an engineer.
The boiler tried to fire but saw no flame signal.
Try the hob and check any prepayment meter credit.
A cold-morning cause on Viessmann boilers too.
The ignition and flame-sensing electrodes are the usual parts at fault.
Checked by an engineer if F4 keeps returning.
Use the reset button as the manual describes.
It is a safety lockout. Usually a single part or a supply issue, but it should not be reset repeatedly.
Yes. Send the model and the code and we will tell you the likely cause.
A frozen condensate pipe is the most likely reason. Thaw it with warm water and reset once.
Once is fine. If the code comes straight back, stop resetting and get it looked at, because the boiler is telling you the cause is still there.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. The back lists exactly which appliances that engineer is qualified to work on, and the number can be checked on the Gas Safe Register.
F4 on many Viessmann Vitodens boilers means the boiler tried to fire and the control did not receive a flame signal, so it locked out. Viessmann boilers are less common than Worcester or Baxi, but plenty were fitted in Birmingham over the last decade, especially in newer extensions and refurbished homes in Harborne, Edgbaston and Bournville.
Start with the gas supply. If the hob will not light either, the issue is the meter, the emergency control valve or the supply, not the boiler. On a prepayment meter, check the credit.
Next, on a cold morning, check the condensate pipe where it leaves the house. If it is frozen, the boiler cannot run. Thaw it with warm water, then reset once using the reset button described in the manual.
If F4 returns with the gas on and the pipe clear, the likely causes are the ignition electrode, the ionisation electrode that senses the flame, the gas valve or the flue. Viessmann boilers are well made but particular about electrode condition and gap, and that needs an engineer with the right parts. Codes differ a little between models and years, so check the meaning in your own boiler manual too.
Send a photo of the display and the boiler badge on WhatsApp and we can usually tell you the likely cause before anyone sets off. If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
